Father’s Day Book Recommendations

Nick

Father’s Day is this Sunday and if you happen to have a father in your life who, like myself, loves to learn about becoming the best dad they can be I have four book recommendations that helped me grow.

The Expectant Father

Father's Day Book Recommendations

Let’s start with a book for those who are about to become a father. I’ve read a few new dad books but this one was by far and away the best one I came across. Each chapter is broken into months of the pregnancy so if you’re a slow reader you have about a month to read 20-30 pages. It was super helpful to know what was happening and how to best support my wife in each stage as well as preparing me for what was coming next. As someone who loves to be in the know this book was valuable.

Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build On For Life

Father's Day Book Recommendations

A book recommendation for fathers with children older than toddlers. Fabulous book with practical lessons on helping boys develop into healthy men. This book covered a lot of ground on some important tools that I missed growing up that I want to make sure that my son has so that he can be strong emotionally, socially, and spiritually. I must admit this also opened up a lot of practices I have added into my own rhythms as well. Highly recommend. I know this one is gender specific but the principles learned in this book are valuable. (if you don’t have sons in your life I’ve heard really good things about Raising Worry-Free Girls by Sissy Goff who wrote the forward to this book.)

The Intentional Father: A Practical Guide to Raise Sons of Courage and Character

Father's Day Book Recommendations

The author of this book Jon Tyson is a pastor in Manhattan. I read this book earlier than probably recommended, as it’s written as a practical guide for fathers and their teenage sons as a way to mentor them into good faithful men. While I’m looking forward to really putting this book into action when my son is a teenager this was still a valuable read as there are exercises in the book that help you work out your own relationship issues and allow you to grow from them so that you can provide the best for your son. He also has one about Raising Daughters coming out soon.

Parenting Your… (Series)

Father's Day Book Recommendations

If you’re like me and love the curriculum from Grace Kids you may not know this but they make parenting guides for you that help you partner with them. They are really good and they bring a lot of context to each phase of your child’s life. They have a book for every age from new born through 12th grade. Inside each book they unpack four conversations to have at each phase about faith, health, sexual integrity, and technology. It’s been very beneficial for me to know what are the development milestones appropriate for each phase.
